Ulysses S. Grant’s reputation has certainly had its ups and downs over since his death in 1885. In the last twenty or so years, a slew of full biographies by Geoffrey Perret, Jean Smith, Brooks Simpson (rumored to be now working on volume 2), Ronald White, and Ron Chernow have done much to bring Grant back into view. A book dealing solely with the presidency of Grant by Charles Calhoun also brought a needed fresh perspective.Most Americans today would have no idea of the massive public outpouring of grief and sympathy after the death of Grant in 1885 when he was virtually lionized by the country and even by his former Confederate foes. The story of his heroic struggle to complete his memoirs before his death gripped the nation and helped to ensure their commercial success and financial security for his widow. Even today, despite some detractors, Grant’s Memoirs continue to receive accolades as the finest by a military commander or president. Louis Picone does us a great service by reminding us of these events and much more in his relatively short (in comparison to the above Grant lengthy tomes) and accessible work.Picone focuses on the efforts after Grant’s death to construct a combination tomb/memorial in his honor in New York City in a location selected by his family. Given the huge popularity of Grant, it would seem an easy task. Surprisingly, despite a seemingly stellar association of leading New York business and political leaders, their fundraising efforts lacked zeal, effort, and imagination, almost as if these gentlemen (and they were all men) just expected the money to come rolling in. Anyone involved in fundraising would know just how naïve such expectations were. To be fair, their efforts were stymied by some unforeseen circumstances. In what can only be considered a snit by the Grand Army of the Republic upset because it wanted Grant to be buried in Washington, D.C., it initially refused participation or to encourage its huge membership of Union veterans to contribute. After the efforts seemed incredibly close to collapse, who rides to the rescue but Horace Porter, Grant’s aide in the Civil War and later his personal secretary when President, who with highly commendable drive and instinct accomplishes a course correction and pushes the effort forward to a conclusion.Still, as Picone ably demonstrates, funding for Grant’s Tomb, both before and after its construction was always a problem. Even after the National Park Service assumed ownership in 1959 of what became formally known as the General Grant National Memorial, maintenance and funding issues worsened. Site conditions deteriorated even further in the 1980s and 1990s as the park became inhabited by sketchy characters who used the structure as an outdoor toilet, drug haven, and gang hangout. The park became a proverbial “no-go” area for residents and visitors (and even for NPS staff who were afraid to go there!) - reminiscent of the 1981 Kurt Russell movie, Escape from New York. Picone then introduces us to a plucky college park volunteer, Frank Scaturro, who was outraged by conditions and NPS indifference, and then embarked on a fascinating campaign to restore Grant’s Tomb to its former glory. Mr. Scaturro is the president of the Grant Monument Association and heartily deserves the public’s recognition and thanks. Picone does a workmanlike job in his narrative and deserves credit for making this story known in such a manageable book that can be enjoyed in a few sittings.I visited Grant’s Tomb for the first time in the mid-to-late 2000s and was struck by the majesty of the structure and lovely park setting near the Hudson. A bit off the proverbial path in New York City, but anyone interested in U.S Grant needs to take the time to visit. In this era of indiscriminate monument vandalism, even statues of Grant in other cities have been targeted by those either out of ignorance or just simple nihilism. I hope Grant’s Tomb will escape this unjust fate. General Grant and his wife have received the final resting place they so richly deserved, and their tomb should be a place of respect and peace.
