Justin Vovks In Destinys Hands is the heartbreaking story of five children of Austrias iconic empress, Maria Theresa, who watched as their royal worlds were ripped apart by tragedy and epic misfortunes. These are the stories of Joseph, whose disastrous reign forced Austria to the brink of civil war; Amalia, the brazen and scandalous duchess who married a boy-prince and died exiled and forgotten; Leopold, Maria Theresas unassuming second son, who was the envy of Europe until his tumultuous reign was cut tragically short; Maria Carolina, the very Austrian queen of Naples, who ended her days fighting Napoleon with her dying breath; and Marie Antoinette, the legendary teenage bride, who was hated and reviled as Queen of France and met her ultimate fate on the guillotine, a testimony to her mothers vain ambition. Painstakingly researched and masterfully crafted, In Destinys Hands brings to vivid life the world of the eighteenth century like never before.Readers will find many fascinating details in Vovks In Destinys Hands. Vovk has shed light on these individuals and provided a much needed new work on Maria Theresasprogeny.Julia P. Fantastic book. Very well written, holds your interest and gives real insights into this incredible woman, her life and times, and of course her five special children who are the focus of this book.Maria Theresa was a strong monarch first, matriarch second- if you could even say the two are separate things, they are so intertwined. She was an unstoppable force of nature in a time when women weren't exactly regarded as equally capable as men for much of anything, let alone being a monarch. This book is carefully researched and gives an excellent overview of the power plays going on in Europe for the 18th century. And just as family relationships can fall apart, and despite her best efforts, thrones were toppled even in her lifetime. She expected destiny to be led by her hand which in some cases it was, but maybe not in the way she expected. All this woman wanted was to see her dynasty thrive. Whatever it took, shifting children around the thrones of Europe like so many chess pieces, she had one goal in life. She did not succeed. Some of her decisions were more clear-headed than others, and the author does a great job of showing how the personalities and foibles of each of these special children contributed to the state of affairs both at the beginning and at the end of their respective reigns. As a French history buff I was particularly interested to read the author's take on Marie Antoinette's rise and fall, along with that of Napoleon. The circumstances surrounding the revolution and aftermath were as much influenced by family ties as politics -which in some cases are the same thing. And yet it all goes full circle when Napoleon married into the Austrian royal family - the great-niece of Marie Antoinette.I do wonder that Maria Theresa encouraged as much marriage between cousins. Although after her death, the weirdest was certainly Frances II with his double first cousin Maria Theresa- they shared all four grandparents. Her era surely knew that inbreeding among animals wasn't a good idea, so basically incestuous marriages for the sake of keeping ties turned out disastrous, even into the 20th century. That, with the social upheaval in the late 18th century, tore her idealized view of a Europe dominated by Hapsburgs to shreds. The author did a lot of research and used primary sources when available, and this is a good read for students of history or anyone who is fascinated by the age of enlightenment.
